With the beginnings of industrialization and the fencing of land into private ownership, the soil we live on goes from being a non-reproducible commodity to a fragile commodity in the capitalist system. In the mirror of exploding rents and gentrified inner cities, the relationship between us and the matter of ground becomes evident.
The Vacant Lot is an undeveloped area of land that generates non-performance winnings for speculators. It is public sector investment that enhances the Vacant Lot. These profits, however, are not used for the common good, they remain in private hands.
For us as a collective, the Vacant Lot also stands for a free space where collective experimentation finds its place and new forms of redistribution of resources can be tested. To vacant lot musically and performatively explores this ambivalence of the matter of ground.
